A Travel Adaptor Is Essential
A Universal Travel Adaptor is a must-have little item and will help you out wherever you are in the World. Be sure to buy one from Amazon or a discount store chain before you go though as they are always more expensive in Airports!
Mobile Phone Essentials
- A mobile phone with Internet capability so you can keep in touch with your family and friends and GPS so you can get easy to follow directions when you do not speak the language – or maybe there is just no-one to ask!
- Use App Guides instead of carrying guide books to the various cities on your itinerary – lighter and always up to date.
- A Roaming data and phone use plan to ensure there are no nasty surprises when the bill comes in!
Money Saving Essentials

Limit the number of cash withdrawals you make. There is usually a fee per withdrawal; this is in addition to a percentage fee on the amount you want to take out of the Bank so it is better to make fewer, larger transactions and to withdraw from local ATMs rather than from airports or hotels.
Don’t forget to let your Bank and credit card Company know about your trip – you do not want to find your cards have been frozen at some far-flung outpost of civilization! Sorting out the problem will cost you time and hassle!
Know how much to tip! This guide to tipping etiquette around the world (http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/travel/tip-guide-tipping-culture-countries-2062048), will not only show you when, where and how much to tip, but may prevent you by wasting money on unnecessary tips. Travelex, a provider of currency exchange services, estimates that one in four of us are wasting up to an estimated $100 on over-tipping on vacation!
Store this website address https://www.couchsurfing.org/. Check it wherever you are in the world as the idea is that you can type in the city you are visiting and are likely to find that someone amongst on this online traveler community site will be happy to offer you a couch for a night, a week, or more! Everyone wins, you get to share your experiences with travel-minded people, learn more about their culture and save a lot of money at the same time!
The foregoing suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg! If you are going to travel the World for a year you will be doing lots of research of your own before you leave. There are guidebooks, DVDs, websites and forums packed with advice from travelers who have ‘walked the walk’ and spending time taking note of the tips that come from their combined experience will make your trip richer, more rewarding and less expensive!
